A Look at the Best Dressed List: Fashion for the Soul

Our look at GQ’s Best Dressed Men continues. All three of today's best-dressed gentlemen are from the music industry. They are as varied in their styles as they are in the music.

Today we will start with number 50 of their list:

Frank Ocean

He made it on this list, it seems, because he showed up to the Met Gala dressed in an understated and plain black suit, white shirt and bow tie. The 2019 Met Gala’s informal theme was “camp,” and had Jared Leto wearing a Gucci design and carrying his own head and Billy Porter with gold wings, so Frank Ocean stood out!

However, Frank Ocean’s styles are not always understated. Remember is gold pineapple sunglasses or his 2012 MTV Music Awards outfit: polka dot shirt and plaid shorts!

Frank knows how to style!

Anderson .Paak

Nope, that is not a typo. Anderson .Paak is an eclectic musician with music reminiscent of 60s funk, 70s soul, hip hop, R&B, electronic and rock who was on Dr. Dre’s 2015 album, Compton.

There is a DOT in his name. And according to him, it stands for detail. .Paak told NPR “I feel that people take you as serious[ly] as you take yourself. I spent a lot of time working on my craft, developing my style, and after I came out of my little incubation I promised that I would pay attention to detail. And on top of that, I want to make sure that dot is always there to remind me and to remind others”.

But it is not only his music that is eclectic and focused on detail. Check out his threads! .Paak’s clothes are fun, often throwbacks and always colorful. You can find him in Hawaiian shirts, Vans, bucket hats, cool shades and mismatched patterns. But do not assume that his style is haphazard! Somehow shiny leopard-skin pants and a Hawaiian shirt go perfectly together.

His stylist is Jasmin Benjamin; she used to work with Miguel before .Paak. If you want to see some great styles Benjamin created for .Paak, check out pictures from his Best Teef in the Game tour from 2019. Colorful and psychedelic patterns.

John Legend

GQ names Legend at #23 on the list and noted that this was a style we can all “try at home.” Legend's style is classic and modern like his music. On stage, he is often wearing something formal and fitted. Off the stage, he is still tailored but a little looser. He is usually in solid colors, but he can be playful too. A pink Gucci shirt under a black suit. Pale blue suit. Green blazer with a pink collar. Credit for that playfulness is often given to his stylist, David Thomas.

The best thing about John Legend’s style: he always looks good AND comfortable.

2020 was has been a weird year for sure, but one cool thing to come out of it is men’s style. The red carpet and fashion spotlight is no longer only for women. The men of 2020 showed up looking good with unique styles that complemented their personalities, crafts and souls.

Loving this trend!
